Propagate government's achievements: Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin

Work on the Hogenakkal drinking water scheme had already started and is going on in full swing, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said. Responding to the charges of AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa regarding the Hogenakkal Scheme, he said he was ready to accompany her and show the progress of the scheme.

The DMK government relied on its achievements, the welfare schemes and development works in the State. The government fulfilled all its poll promises made during the 2006 assembly election.

The very first order signed by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was supply of rice at Rs.2 per kg through the ration shops. Later on the price of the rice was reduced to Re.1 per kg. The government had waived Rs.7,000 crore of cooperative farm loans soon after it came to power. Ninety-five per cent of the poor people in the State were given colour television sets, he said.

The DMK will win the election with a margin of over 40,000 to 45,000 thousand votes. Now that Mr. Karunanidhi is campaigning in the constituency, the margin would be over 60,000, and the opposition candidates would lose their deposit, he said.

List DMK rule’s achievements to win votes: Azhagiri

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam south zone organising secretary M.K. Azhagiri asked cadres to seek votes for the party in the Lok Sabha election by highlighting the achievements of the DMK Government in the State.

Addressing party workers here on Tuesday, he said that the State Government had implemented many welfare schemes like one kg rice for Re.1, free television set scheme, free cooking gas connections, farmers’ loan waiver, marriage assistance and assistance for pregnant women.
Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, would come for campaigning, he informed.

Mr. Azhagiri instructed party office-bearers to conduct periodical meetings of party town and union units. Office-bearers should collect local issues from the branch secretaries and try to solve them with the help of Ministers. “If they are not solved, you come to me, I will solve it,” he said. Mr. Azhagiri also warned the branch secretaries of stern action if they failed to attend those meetings without valid reasons.
Party district secretary and Minister for Backward Classes K.K.S.S.R. Ramchandran and Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu participated.

IN THENI
More leaders from Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam would come to DMK fold shortly. M. Kannappan started it and Cumbum N. Ramakrishnan followed suit. Other leaders would also follow in large number, according to M.K. Azhagiri, party’s south zone organising secretary.
Presiding over a DMK party workers meeting held here on Tuesday evening, he said that the landslide victory in Thirumangalam and Madurai West constituencies were due to hard work of party workers. “Moreover, I was given the post of zone organising secretary because of their hard work only. But this post will not separate me from you,” he assured.“We had even shattered the bastion of MGR. It should continue. No matter whether we (DMK) contested in Theni or our ally Congress fought, Mr. Azhagiri added.“We should help Congress candidate win the election by a margin of one lakh votes.”
Special Representative of Tamil Nadu for New Delhi Cumbum P. Selvendran and Bodi MLA S. Lakshmanan and Cumbum N. Ramakrishnan spoke.

Free TV sets distribution (2006–TILL DATE)

PROMISE KEPT: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi handing over a colour television set to a beneficiary at a samathuvapuram near Padapai in Kancheepuram district

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday launched the free colour televisions for the poor scheme near here and asserted that the DMK was committed to fulfilling all election promises.
Speaking after the inauguration at the Periyar Memorial Samathuvapuram (an attempt at social engineering where people of all religions and castes selected from nearby villages live in a community) at Thundal Kazhani, Karasangal (Kancheepuram district), Mr. Karunanidhi said that as many as 25,245 television sets would be distributed across the State beginning on Friday.

This was only the first phase and would get over in a few days. Just as all guests at a wedding do not feast at the same time, the distribution of television sets could not be done in one go.

This year, the State Government provided Rs.750 crore in the budget for distributing television sets to the poor.
Making some back-of-the-envelope calculation, he said Rs. 9 crore provided now had fetched about 30,000 television sets. As many as 25 lakh sets could be purchased with the Rs.750 crore allotted for the current year.

Similar allocations would be made in budgets in the coming years too. This would ensure that no home was left without a television set. "Even if one crore people need to be given television sets, we will give them," he said.
Mr. Karunanidhi said the main opposition party and a section of the media were spreading half-truths about the scheme and other schemes of the DMK Government. The ruling party should keenly watch the utterances of the Opposition, he said, but welcomed constructive criticism from allies. The inauguration of the television scheme coincided with former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai's birthday. Similarly all great leaders of the past were being remembered in a befitting manner. On Periyar's birth anniversary, the two-acre land for landless farmers scheme would be launched in Tiruvallur. A law was enacted to declare former Chief Minister Kamaraj's birth anniversary as
Educational Development day, he said.
"We did not merely issue a G.O [Government Order] on this. Because it would end up as `GO' [if a different government came to power], we enacted a law," he said and added that if only a G.O. had to be issued, it would have been easy to ignore it when a different government took office.

On the free land scheme, he said that though the promise was to give two acres, he was certain that even if the land was less than two acres by "a few inches," people would not object. The intention was to develop and distribute all the wasteland to the poor, landless farmers. It was with this in mind that a Minister was sent to West Bengal to study land reforms there.
Union Information Technology Minister, Dayanidhi Maran and Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said people would thank the DMK government in a befitting manner in the upcoming local body polls. Representatives of allied parties praised the Government for implementing promises.

Voters are possibly the happiest and the most profitable bunch in the state of Tamil Nadu. The claim sounds suitable for more or less every house in the state now as they have a color television, thanks to the DMK party that won elections in May this year. Declaring color TV a fundamental need,DMK had given its word to hand out free television sets to the poor section of the state. The promise has turned out to be fruitful and the party swept to power in May.
Television, “these days’ is not only the source of entertainment, but is more, it gives information regarding politics, health and public wakefulness issues,
says DMK’s party secretary, TKS Elangovam.
Until now the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party, or DMK, has distributed 60,000 TV sets and is even now making a plan to hand out 30,000 more in the upcoming months, along with gas stoves and free rice. Maybe offering free cable connections in the upcoming elections could give the party fresh a chance to firm up its toehold in Tamil Nadu.

FULFILLING A PROMISE: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi handing over a television set to one of the beneficiaries at a function in Chennai on Tuesday. Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy and Chennai Mayor M. Subramanian (right) are in the picture.

CHENNAI: Successful implementation of the free colour television distribution scheme has proved critics wrong, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said here on Tuesday.
He was addressing a function held to distribute free colour TV sets and free gas stoves along with LPG connection.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, in its Assembly elections manifesto, had declared that if elected to power, it would implement such a scheme.
At that time, those in the rival camp had ridiculed the idea and raised questions about its practicability. “They urged people not to be carried away by the promise. Today, the country knows very well who has been wrong,” he said.
The Chief Minister said 30,000 TV sets were distributed at a cost of Rs.9 crore in the first phase.
During the second phase, 25 lakh TV sets would be distributed at a cost of Rs.685 crore.
So far, about 21.09 lakh sets had been given to beneficiaries. For the third phase, the Government was procuring 34.25 lakh colour television sets at a cost of Rs.750 crore.
He said the tendering process for the scheme was transparent. The committee included leaders of all parties in the Assembly.

This was to ensure that there was no scope for any wrongdoing.
Chennai Mayor M. Subramanian said 16,521 stoves would be distributed in the city this week.
Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said work was underway on four of the ten bridges proposed.

Thiruverkadu to get two new bridges

SET TO CHANGE: The causeway linking Poonamallee High Road near Velappanchavadi and Thiruverkadu will soon be replaced with a high-level bridge.

CHENNAI: The State Highways Department will soon construct two new bridges and strengthen an existing facility in the western suburbs of Chennai to ease tra ffic congestion and enhance connectivity.
The works would be taken up at a cost of nearly Rs. 4.40 crore under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme of the department.

As the existing causeway across the Cooum river in Thiruverkadu is narrow, it would be replaced by a high-level bridge at a cost of Rs. 2.60 crore. It links the Velappanchavadi junction on Poonamallee High Road and Sridevi Karumariamman Temple Road, Thiruverkadu.

P.Chakravarthy, a resident of Thiruverkadu, said as the facility was only 7 metre wide and since many buses used it, traffic snarls had become common. Highways Department officials said that up to 8,000 passenger car units used the causeway daily during peak hours. The work to construct a 75-metre-long and 11-m wide, with footpath, high-level bridge would be taken up adjacent to the causeway and completed in six to eight months.

Similarly, the two-lane bridge on Poonamallee Avadi Road near Seneerkuppam would be widened to a four-lane facility. At present, the bridge receives nearly 30,000 passenger car units daily. Besides residents of Avadi and Puzhal, heavy vehicles diverted from city use the 10-metre-long bridge, across the Cooum.

The width of the bridge would be increased from 9 metre to 21 metre to ease congestion. The work would be completed in six months.

As the Lakshmipuram Puzhal Road linking Retteri and Puzhal has been made four lane, a culvert would be replaced with a bridge, at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh, within six months, the officials added. The bridge would be 20 metre long and 18.5 metre wide.
